Ryan Murphy also reveals more details of the upcoming big twist, saying that the cast will be playing different roles.
As we're anticipating a huge twist in the sixth episode of "American Horror Story: Roanoke", Ryan Murphy has shared more details of it. During a conference call on Tuesday, October 18, the series co-creator said, "The season was sort of written as if the season was two different shows. Something happens where half the cast is revealed to be playing and doing something absolutely different than you've seen in the first five."
To E! News, Murphy further revealed that even the actors were kept in the dark about the big twist until they started shooting episode 4. "I had to call up Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates. We didn't tell them [the twist] this year. So we had them thinking this idea that they were playing one thing through the whole year, and right around the time we started shooting episode four, I called them up and I said, 'OK, I didn't want to tell you this, but it will be revealed that you're actually something completely different than what the audience thought you were.' And they all loved that challenge," he recalled.
Speaking of what to expect from the rest of season 6, Murphy confirmed that Taissa Farmiga and Finn Wittrock would appear in upcoming episode(s). He teased that Wittrock would play "most f**ked-up character of all time."
Evan Peters will also return in episode six and he has a big role in the said outing. Murphy explained, "Evan Peters in episode six is one of the greatest, most hilarious things Evan has ever done and he loved it. He's a very big, pivotal part of episode six, playing a completely different character than what we've seen him play."
Murphy also confirmed that Lady GaGa's witch character is the First Supreme, which is a nod to season 3, "Coven". He promised that "at some point, we're going to do a return to the 'Coven' season," though he's still unsure what season that would include a tie to the third installment.
He, however, can say that season 7 would connect to "Freak Show". He dished on the next season's storyline, "Next year, we will be going back to some 'Freak Show' characters, deeper histories and myhthologies. So we're sort of still exploring season 4 in season 7."
Murphy further revealed that some of the characters and mythology of "Roanoke" will "continue in subsequent seasons." He teased about the season finale, "So it's the ending but not the ending."
"AHS: Roanoke" airs Wednesdays at 10 P.M. on FX.
