The pair who got engaged in the season finale of 'The Bachelor' season 20 call off their wedding in an emotional episode of 'Ben and Lauren: Happily Ever After?'
Ben Higgins has called off his wedding to Lauren Bushnell. The couple's shocking decision was revealed in the latest episode of "Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?", which chronicles the highs and the lows of their relationship post-"The Bachelor" for the past few months.
In the episode that aired on Tuesday, November 15, the couple went to marriage counseling, which was a group session with their friends, two of whom are twin sisters who aren't married to each other. During the therapy session, Ben surprised Lauren by telling her that he wasn't ready to start a new life with her.
"I'm ready for you to know me," he said. "What I want is for you to walk down the aisle and me be like, 'That's my girl. I know her. You know me.' "
Ben, in tears, explained, "I don't want us to rush it. I think making a commitment, like marrying somebody, involves knowing what you're getting into. There's still things that we need to know. And I would rather do that now that get into... After a wedding and then, all of a sudden, sit down and be like, 'What the hell did we just do?' I think this thing sped up real fast and we haven't had a second to breathe. We both started to know each other. We were engaged. Like, it's weird. But now it's time not to rush anything else."
"I'm not leaving you," he assured Lauren. "I'm not. Don't think about that for a second. No matter what is said or what I express to you, none of it comes back to me ever not being your husband at all. When I say that, even think about not being your husband, I'll get the tears again." He further explained, "I think when it comes to the wedding, I feel like we have so much to figure out that it's hard for me at this point to really feel comfortable getting married."
Lauren was completely shocked by his decision and told the twins that it was "the last thing" that she expected.
Following the therapist's suggestion that they take a road trip, the couple went to Sin City in Denver, where they met a couple, Ed Shevick and Florence "Toots" Shevick, who had been married for 70 years. It clearly made Lauren feel better about the situation. She said, "Meeting them and talking with them put everything in perspective. Ed had cold feet, too, and Toots gave him the time that he needed. It made me realize that if Ben needs a little more time to feel comfortable getting married, that he should really have it because in the end, it won't matter if this wedding is a little bit later."
Based on a photo on Ben's Instagram, Ben and Lauren are still together and recently went on a service trip to Honduras.
No wedding date has been announced yet. But at least we know the question mark on the show's title is there for a good reason.
"Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?" airs every Tuesday at 8 P.M. ET on Freeform.
