Ed Helms will provide the voice of the titular superhero, a tyrannical principal who has been hypnotized into believing he is an underpants-and-cape wearing superhero.
One more superhero movie is joining the pack of next year's massive tentpoles like "Logan", "Wonder Woman", "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and "Justice League", but it's a different kind of superhero. Called "Captain Underpants", it's a DreamWorks animated movie that will introduce the titular superhero, whose voice is provided by Ed Helms.
The first-look image of the movie has also landed online. Debuted via Entertainment Weekly, the image offers fans a close look at the said character, a tyrannical principal who has been hypnotized by two mischievous fourth graders into believing that he is an underpants-and-cape wearing superhero.
"[Helms] has managed to tap into the sheer stupidity of Captain Underpants," director David Soren said, laughing. He continued, "He's a delusional superhero who thinks he's got all kinds of powers and has literally zero ability beyond just that of a middle-aged man."
"The lovely thing is that we have two creative boys at the center of this thing, so anything they dream up really is something we can just lean into heavily," the helmer added. "It constantly keeps the story feeling like it's been made by two fourth graders, as opposed to me."
Written by Nicholas Stoller, the animated film follows two fourth graders who are best friends and draw comics that they sell on the playground. Their creation, Captain Underpants, becomes real when the duo accidentally hypnotize the school's mean principal who turns into an actual superhero.
"Captain Underpants" is coming to U.S. theaters on June 2, 2017. It also features the voices of Nick Kroll, Kevin Hart, Jordan Peele and Thomas Middleditch.
