Soon after it was released on Friday, the internet is slamming the 'horrifying' trailer for the live-action adaptation of the Japanese Manga series of graphic novels by Yukito Kishiro.
As seen in the nearly-two-minute trailer, Alita, played by Rosa Salazar, is portrayed as having huge eyes in a normal-sized head. While big eyes are an important part of manga character design in order to give the characters a signature cute look, people thought it didn't fit in with live-action human beings as they would look creepy.
As noted by one Twitter user, "The Alita: Battle Angel IRL anime eyes are truly horrifying. Some styles only work when drawn." Another wondered, "How is the CGI in the new #DeathStranding teaser (a video game trailer) more convincing than ALITA's face in a $150M+ major summer studio blockbuster with effects handled by Weta?"

There were also some people who compared Alita's face to that of the baby from the "Twilight Saga" movie series and Rapunzel from "Tangled". "In the wake of that 'Alita: Battle Angel' trailer, seems like a good time to collectively remember this iconic demon child," one said. "Alita is the hidden sister of Rapunzel," another tweeted.

The backlash aside, the trailer introduces fans to other characters in the upcoming sci-fi film in addition to Alita. The trailer shows how Christoph Waltz's Dr. Dyson Ido, a scientist who later becomes her surrogate father, finds the titular cyborg in a wreckage and reconstructs her. The video also offers glimpses of Keenan Johnson's Hugo, who is Alita's love interest, Jennifer Connelly's Chiren, Mahershala Ali's Victor and Ed Skrein's Zapan, a robotic antagonist who intends to kill Alita.
"Alita: Battle Angel" is set to be released in theaters across the nation on July 20, 2018. It's based on the Japanese Manga series of graphic novels by Yukito Kishiro. The movie, according to producer Cameron, is adapted from "the spine story" of the manga, with a specific focus on the first four books. He especially wants to include the fictional sport "Motorball" from the third and fourth volumes.
The film also stars Jackie Earle Haley, Michelle Rodriguez, Eiza Gonzalez, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Lana Condor, Leonard Wu and Marko Zaror.
