'The First Purge' Trailer Takes Back to Where the Deadly Tradition Begins

Marisa Tomei plays the creator of the Purge who devises it as a psychological experiment, but a government conspiracy turns it into a political device.

You've seen the horror in the first three "The Purge" films and now "The First Purge" will show how it all began. The first trailer for the fourth installment in the franchise has been released, giving a look at the creation of the bloody tradition and how most people are unprepared for it.

Marisa Tomei plays Dr. May Updale, who devises the Purge as a psychological experiment to curtail crime in the country. "Is the Purge a political device?" a CNN reporter asks her. She answers, "It's a psychological one." The Purge is, of course, met with protest and some people are seen not ready for what's to come.

Dr. Updale soon realizes that she may have helped unleash hell on Earth for the citizens, especially those of minority. The video hints at a government conspiracy in which soldiers are sent into poor, African-American neighborhoods posing as nonmilitary citizens to kill innocent people.

"Human nature does not obey the laws of politics," Dr. Updale says. Meanwhile, a threatened citizen complains as he realizes the situation, "Our neighborhood is under siege from a government who doesn't give a s**t about any of us!"

According to the official synopsis, "to push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation."

Gerard McMurray directs "The First Purge" based on a screenplay written by James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the previous films. Y'Lan Noel, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Lex Scott Davis also star in the film, which is set to be released on July 4 in the U.S.
