The former 'Katie' host will return to the NBC morning show starting January 2, filling in for Savannah Guthrie who is on maternity leave.
Katie Couric is heading back to "Today". The former NBC News anchor is tapped as a guest co-anchor on the NBC morning show for a week in 2017. She will join Matt Lauer starting January 2, filling in for Savannah Guthrie who is on maternity leave after she gave birth to her second child on December 9.
Couric co-anchored "Today" from 1991 until 2006. She left NBC for CBS, where she became an anchor and managing director of "CBS Evening News" as well as a correspondent for "60 Minutes". She departed the Eye in 2011 when her contract ran out. The 59-year-old journalist became a special correspondent for ABC News from 2011 until 2013, and has been global news anchor for Yahoo! since 2014.
Couric has never co-hosted "Today" since her departure from the show, though she has returned as a guest. She once appeared on "Today" rival, "Good Morning America" on ABC, in 2012 as a guest co-host.
"Today" has also tapped Meredith Vieira and Natalie Morales as co-anchors for a week each in January.
