'Game of Thrones' Prequel Is Being Discussed, HBO Says

HBO boss Casey Bloys confirms talks about the potential prequel to 'Game of Thrones' are still ongoing with the author.

HBO executive Casey Bloys confirms HBO is still talking to author George R.R. Martin about the prequel to "Game of Thrones". A specific idea for a follow-up to the hit series at this point might be put in development. Bloys says, "I would say it's still kind of preliminary, ongoing talks. There are areas we are exploring but I wouldn't point to anyone and say this is what we're going to do."

Also in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bloys is asked if the final hours of "Game of Thrones" will be released in theaters. He says, "I want everything I can get for HBO, let me put it that way."

This is not the first time the subject of a "Game of Thrones" spin-off came up. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss explained in September, "One of the great things about what [Martin] did is he didn't just build a story. He built a world with so many characters and such a rich, detailed history behind it." Benioff added, "There are a lot of different ways you could go with it. We just really haven't had time to really think through the details of it because we're so focused on getting the show made."

"Game of Thrones" season 7 will premiere in summer of 2017.
